CHO-CHAN

Born in 1981, currently living in Osaka. CHO-CHAN has been interested in body shapes of Western people and depicts them mainly with acrylic paint on canvas or with embroidery. CHO-CHAN also uses newspaper, collage, and typography as mediums in her artwork. This western style parallels to the style depicted in the film “BEAUTIFUL LOSERS,” the art of Margaret Kilgallen and Stephen Powers. However, CHO-CHAN’s artwork still has some likeness to Japanese art. Recently, CHO-CHAN has been getting recognized by art fans overseas. In 2007, CHO-CHAN was featured in the art book “digmeout 06,” and collaborated with Sony WALKMAN. CHO-CHAN also created artwork for “Tsotsi” (a novel by Athol Fugard) and CD jackets, as well as designing T-shirts for BEAMS-T, UT, and ARTEE. CHO-CHAN participated in group exhibitions at the “COMPOUND GALLERY” and designed a poster for the public theater “CENTER STAGE,” both in Portland, OR, U.S.A. CHO-CHAN has been gaining recognition from overseas.

CHO-CHAN(ちょーちゃん）>>1981年生まれ。大阪府在住。外国人の肉付きに興味を持ち、アクリルと刺繍を多用して作品を描き続ける。キャンバス作品に加え、新聞などのコラージュ、タイポグラフィを多用する作風はマーガレット・キルガレン、スティーヴン・パワーズなど「BEAUTIFUL LOSERS」系のクリエイターにも通じるが、どこか日本風で、とぼけた味わいがある。 2007年、アートブック「digmeout06」掲載、Sony WALKMANとのコラボレーション、アソル・フガード原作の小説「ツォツィ」装丁、CDジャケット、BEAMS-TやUT、ARTEEなどT シャツデザイン。ポートランドのパブリック・シアター「CENTER STAGE」の演劇ポスターやCOMPOUND GALLERYなどのグループ展に参加するなど海外でも注目を集める作家になりつつある。

Dear jurors and art collectors:

“digmeout” is an artists agency in Osaka, Japan. We “dig out” young artists with unknown potential through online submissions and reviews. We provide them many opportunities to show their artwork in public: art books, artistic collaborations with companies, exhibitions overseas, selling artwork, etc. Many worldwide companies, such as NISSAN, SONY, and NIKE support our artistic activities.
Now over 150 artists are officially represented by digmeout, and over 550 artists have registered with “AUDITION EVERYDAY,” our online art review which everybody can join freely.
For GEISAI #11, digmeout has selected 7 artists to display their artwork and give a presentation. Most of them are already known in foreign countries through exhibitions or collaborative projects. We believe that they will be active in the world’s art scene.

GEISAI#11にはるばるおいでになる、親愛なる審査員の皆様、そしてコレクターの皆様へ。

私たちは、大阪を拠点に、未知の才能を持った若いアーティストたちを日々発掘、育成しながら、アートブックの出版、大企業とのアートを通じたコラボレーション、海外での展覧会や作品販売等を行うアートエージェントです。私たちのクライアントには、日産、ソニー、ナイキなど世界的な企業が名を連ね、現在、digmeoutに所属するアーティストは150名以上、また、digmeout.netに作品を登録しているアーティストは550名を越えています。
今回のGEISAI では、私たちdigmeoutに所属している作家の中でも、すでに海外での展覧会や大企業とのアートコラボレーションを通じて、表現者としての評価も高まりつつあり、程なく日本、海外のアートシーンへと踊り出るであろうと、私たちが確信している作家ばかりを選りすぐって作品プレゼンテーションをしたいと考えています。このブログでは各アーティストのプロフィールと代表作品、またGEISAI#11開催１週間前を目処に、展示作品のデータと販売価格をいち早くお知らせする予定です。ぜひこまめにチェックをよろしくお願いします。digmeoutのブースはA-022です。また私たちの活動についてはdigmeout.netのページをご覧ください。当日会場でお会いできる事を楽しみにしています。
